Search Engine Optimization

If you want visitors, readers, customers, or to find your website, you need search engines to find it.

SEO (search engine optimization) refers to all of the techniques and best practices that allow a website to achieve prominent search engine rankings.

I heard a lot more about this topic ten years ago than I do today. One reason for that is because Google, Yahoo, Bing or whatever search engine you like will find your site eventually. They are always searching with bots for new content.

You can pay companies to help optimize your site, but that is a cost and service that I don't feel is necessary for most of my customers.

And there are things that you can do on your own or that your web designer should do when building your site.

For example, you should edit title tags, meta descriptions, and alt image attributes so that they can be found by those bots.

Using search-friendly URLs helps. For example, https://yourwebsite.com/web-samples is better than https://yourwebsite.com/2567487.html (The latter is a format that some free website builder sites and programs will self generate.)

More sophisticated SEO features would include keyword density tools, conversion tools and automated XML and HTML sitemaps.

Wix and Web.com are website builders that offer all of the features mentioned above on their premium offerings.

As this graphic points out, in 2018 SEO includes being found in ways that no one imagined in the early days of the web, such as by voice search or on a phone.

SEO - More Important than in 2017
